CPRE

on Thursday, Jul 12, 2018

We are CPRE, the countryside charity. We want a thriving, beautiful countryside for everyone. We believe in countryside and green spaces that are accessible to all, rich in nature and playing a crucial role in responding to the climate emergency. With a local CPRE group in every county in England, we’re advocating nationwide for the kind of countryside we all want: one with sustainable, healthy communities and available to more people than ever, including those who haven’t benefited before. We stand for a countryside that enriches all of our lives, regenerating our wellbeing, and that we in turn regenerate, protect and celebrate. Some people might remember us as ‘The Campaign to Protect Rural England’ – our previous name, and one of several in our long history. We’ve worked for almost a century to support and promote the countryside, and we’ll be doing this for generations to come. That’s why we call ourselves ‘the countryside charity’.

Dorset Community Energy

on Thursday, Jul 12, 2018

Dorset Community Energy (DCE) is a not-for-profit Community Benefit Society, registered with the Financial Conduct Authority, which facilitates community ownership of renewable energy production. The Society was established in 2013 with support from the BIG Lottery-funded ‘Communities Living Sustainably in Dorset’ project. It has 152 members and is managed by a board of Non-Executive Directors. These members have invested £490,000 in DCE, which has financed the installation of solar photovoltaic panels on twelve schools and four community buildings in Dorset; the total installed capacity is 420 kW. Electricity is provided to the community buildings at zero or low cost, any electricity not used on site is exported to the national electricity grid. Revenue is generated from the sale of electricity and from the government’s feed-in-tariff. The income covers the operational cost of the Society and provides a return on investment to member shareholders. In 2019 DCE launched its third share offer and raised £445,000, and also secured a 40% grant from Dorset Council’s EU-funded Low Carbon Dorset programme.

Dorset Community Foundation

We help people give back to Dorset to improve the lives of others. Many people in our county face disadvantage – some live in areas that are among some of the poorest in the UK, while others struggle with mental health issues, loneliness, disability or discrimination. Our expertise inspires donors to give to those most in need and, because of the partnerships we form, communities in Dorset have benefitted from almost £13 million of grants since 2000. We’ve created a quick and easy guide that explains who we are and what we do. You can download it here.

Julia Hailes Rewilding

I’ve written or co-written nine environmental books, including The Green Consumer Guide (with John Elkington) which sold over 1m copies worldwide. In 1987 I co-founded environmental think tank, SustainAbility and since then have worked with a wide range of companies advising them on issues such as waste, recycling, packaging energy, climate change and deforestation. I work from my home in Dorset and am lucky enough to have spent most of Covid 2020 starting a wilding project. Working with Operation Future Hope, we’ve been creating habitats for a wide variety of species from bees to barn owls – installing ponds, sowing wildflower meadows and nurturing our hedges and edges. Lots more wilding projects to come – keep up with some of them on my blogs…

The Big Give Green Match Fund

on Thursday, Jul 12, 2018

Previously named the Green Match Fund, Earth Raise is a seven-day online match funding campaign dedicated to helping charities playing a vital role in tackling pressing environmental issues, run in partnership with Environmental Funders Network (EFN). The climate crisis demands urgent action. Each of the last three decades has been hotter than the last, with the seven warmest years on record occurring between 2015 and 2021. Our campaign is committed to amplifying the impact of every donation, doubling the difference for global efforts to protect and preserve our planet. Whether it’s safeguarding ecosystems, defending endangered species, or advancing sustainable living, your support will be twice as powerful in driving meaningful change. We’re proud to have created the UK’s largest collaborative environmental fundraising campaign. In 2021, alongside our partners at EFN, we launched the Green Match Fund with a simple yet powerful idea: curate a portfolio of high-impact environmental charities and, for one week around World Earth Day, double public donations through match funding from generous philanthropists and funders.

Wessex Water Foundation We donate more than £500,000 to community and environment-related projects every year. What is the Wessex Water Foundation? The Wessex Water Foundation provides funding to projects that strengthen communities and benefit the environment. It has never been more important to both respond to the needs of our communities and make a firm commitment to support them now and in the future, and the Wessex Water Foundation allows us to do just that. The foundation was launched in 2020 in partnership with the Somerset, Wiltshire, Dorset and Quartet Community Foundations, which help to ensure our funding goes towards the communities that are in most need of support. Grants totalling at least £500,000 are distributed through our Community Fund and Environment Fund every year.
