Eastney is a Victorian house built in about 1885 in the Rodwell area of Weymouth.

Retrofit project completed in 2023 – Converting x10 B&B rooms into 3 self-catered apartments and refurbishing the associated family living accommodation.

Insulation, solar panels (x33) and air source heat pumps (x3). The project was supported by Low Carbon Dorset and partly grant funded by monies from the European Regional Development Fund and is currently remunerated from the Government Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme.

One EV charging point.

We have reused materials where possible, separated and recycled and tried to select from independent local suppliers with good environmental credentials when buying new. Furniture has been upcycled rather than replaced. The gas was disconnected in August 2022.

Lifestyle Changes - We are sharing resources within an extended family group. Our personal family covers 3 generations and our wider Eastney community includes the family next-door.

Two 3000 litre tanks were installed in 2025 collecting rainwater from the roof tops to provide water for growing. A pond assists with overflow during periods of heavy rainfall and there is a “first flush” system to remove dirty water after a dry spell.

We have 4 hens using the chicken manure is a compost accelerator. We share allotment space trying to grow more perennial veg using “no-dig” permaculture methods. Anaerobic digesters take care of food waste not suitable for the compost heap.

Directions & Access - Cyclists welcome – we all cycle and the Rodwell Trail is easy to access. There is parking in Longfield road – please be considerate of our neighbours.

This is an old building with stairs and steps. No lift. Gravel driveway. You may meet Sally, our friendly rescue dog.
