We have lived for three years in this single story granny-flat at the back of the garden and, since it was a new-build, we were determined to make it as carbon neutral as possible. It is raised off the ground in order to provide a rain-watering system for the large Turkey oak seen in the backgound.
The concrete floor is supported on cast aluminium screw piles. Built as a wooden structure with 30cm wood fibre insulation and Baltic larch horizontal external cladding, roofed with second-hand slate tiles.
- Underfloor heating is provided by an air source heat pump
- 16 solar voltaic panels supply electricity for the house. Spare electricity is stored in a house battery, or is used to charge the car. Any excess is exported to the grid.
- The windows are double glazed and designed to be sealed close during the winter months.
- In winter the house is airtight. Mechanical Heat Exchange System Ventilation keeps the air fresh inside..
