What is Carbon Literacy?
“An awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.”
The Carbon Literacy Project offers everyone a day’s worth of Carbon Literacy® learning, covering climate change, carbon footprints, how you can do your bit and why it’s relevant to you and your community.
The Carbon Literacy Project is globally unique – there is nothing else quite like it anywhere. It was recognised as such by the UN at COP21, in Paris, where it was awarded as a TAP100, one of 100 worldwide Transformative Action Programs.

Parish, Town and Community Council Toolkit
This Carbon Literacy course and accreditation equips town and parish clerks, staff, councillors and community group leaders with the understanding of their roles and of their influence in relation to the need to reduce carbon impact. It provides the information they need to communicate the significance of climate change and the changes needed to address the climate emergency.
Dorset Climate Action Network (DCAN) Carbon Literacy facilitators helped develop the toolkit for town and parish councils and have trained clerks, officers and elected members and local community group leaders in the Dorset area since 2020.
After a days-worth of training, participants will have:
- Gained an understanding of the basic science of climate change and how climate change will affect us both globally and locally
- Gained an understanding of how climate change will affect your local community.
- Created an action plan to help reduce the carbon footprint of your council and local area
- Gained an understanding of how to work collaboratively with others to improve health, well-being and resilience in your community
- Explored strategies for talking to, working alongside and influencing others to take action on climate change.
To achieve accreditation as Carbon Literate, participants will undertake both half day workshops in order and complete their evidence form. They will pledge two new actions, one individual and one group, both ideally relating to their role, demonstrating how their actions will reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The pledges submitted on the evidence forms will be assessed by the Carbon Literacy Project after the end of the course. The fee for Carbon Literacy accreditation is included in the DCAN course fee thanks to the Community Pot funding. Individually numbered certificates will be awarded to those successfully achieving accreditation.
The fee for each workshop is £20 (£40 for the course) plus Eventbrite fees.
We are able to offer concessionary rates on tickets for anyone on a low income or unemployed. For more information please email belindabawden@gmail.com
