Britain Talks Climate: a toolkit to help engage with the British public on climate change

Britain Talks Climate is a toolkit designed to support any organisation that wants to engage with the British public on climate change. Its research says this is difficult but that there is currently no ‘culture war’ on climate change in Britain.

Britain Talks Climate groups the population into seven different segments based on people’s core beliefs and identifies ways to engage with each one.

Here are the seven segments. How many do you recognise?

• Progressive Activists (highly-educated, urban, think globally, motivated to fight inequality and injustice…)
• Civic Pragmatists (well-informed about issues, have clear opinions, regularly donate to charity, support civic values and community, consensus, and compromise…)
• Disengaged Battlers (insecure or irregular work, feel disconnected, they blame the system, not other people…)
• Established Liberals (Educated, often quite wealthy, trust the government, think Britain should be more globally-oriented…)
• Loyal Nationals (proud of their country, patriotic, anxious about threats to Britain, feel disrespected by educated elites…)
• Disengaged Traditionalists (self-reliant, take pride in hard work, put a strong priority on crime and justice, individualist…)
• Backbone Conservatives (proud to be British, confident of their place in the world, older, prosperous…)
