Henry, the Great Big Dorset Hedgehog’s, epic coastal trip

Dorset Climate Action Network (Dorset CAN) is one of many groups working to make a difference for our children and grandchildren and anyone else lucky enough to live in the south west.

Where previous generations were concerned about preserving the countryside, we now face an explosion of problems – from sea level rise, massive losses of insects, amphibians and birds to plastic and microplastic pollution and devastating climate change.

But if these disasters are what inspire us to take action, we work with our dream of a:

  •  Zero Carbon Dorset, where the whole county (council, businesses and residents) has stopped causing further climate overheating with carbon emissions from our homes, buildings, cars and energy use.

    ●        Bright Blue Dorset, where every river and stream and beach in Dorset is safe to swim or play in. (Currently our rivers and seas are amongst the most polluted in Europe).

    ●        Wild Green Dorset, where chemical pesticides, fungicides and herbicides are no longer used and tree-planting, meadow and heathland regeneration and spreading hedgerows allow the wild things to live and regenerate across the county.

    ●        Locally Fed Dorset where more and more communities grow food locally and more and more schools, care homes, businesses, restaurants, cafés and private homes use locally grown food.

    ●        Community Centred Dorset, where people of all ages, incomes and backgrounds can afford to live and participate equally in active local communities with schemes for sharing, repairing and recycling and public transport every hour.

    ●        Sparkling Clean Dorset, with radically reduced levels of air pollution and litter alongside a complete halt to selling and using single-use plastics.

This August (2022), Henry, Dorset CAN’s Great Big Dorset Hedgehog mascot will travel in relays through each of the 35 parishes that stretch the length of the Dorset coastline. Henry will be promoting positive ways to mitigate climate change and reverse biodiversity loss and signing up new members of Dorset CAN.

In particular he’ll be promoting our campaign to plant, extend and link up hedges across the county (the Great Big Dorset Hedge), and other initiatives to clean up Dorset’s rivers and coastline.
Numerous Dorset organisations will be joining us to carry Henry using carbon minimal transport bus and train, paddle board, rowing gig, walking, cycling, electric scooters and more.

Do join us in August and sign up for updates on Henry’s travel plans
