Dorset Climate Action Network

Our Core Values

Picture
Dorset CAN Core Values

In pursuit of our bold vision for Dorset we will uphold these values:

To be Open & Welcoming
We are open, welcoming, inclusive and accepting
Always learning, enquiring and open to debate
Flexible to change when necessary
Recognising when we can support and collaborate with others to fulfil our objectives rather than reinventing the wheel; 'mobbing up' together to add strength when needed.

To be Respectful & Accepting
We are humble: we don’t have all the answers - others might have better solutions
We have a mutual Respect for People and Nature
We are committed to find common ground when opinions differ: this can be difficult and time consuming  and may sometimes be unsuccessful, but the effort must be made.
Acknowledging and accepting grief and despair while welcoming hope and possibility
Humility in the face of nature and in accepting we don't know it all - the natural environment is our life support system and we need to listen harder to nature and other humans who live more in harmony with nature than we do
Integrity: synthesising a wide range of views to provide honesty and transparency
Being professional and reliable.
Integrity: being honest, transparent and well-informed in providing solutions to the climate and ecological crises.

To be Solution focused/Solutionists/Optimistic
Solutionist - great ideas that get shared, addressed and delivered
Pragmatism
Fun - changing things whilst not taking the enjoyment of campaigning away
Optimism - to avoid blaming and shaming and instead provide solutions-based options and opportunities to engage 'hearts and minds' in our communities to face the future together in practical action for better outcomes for our people and places.
Focus: We can’t do it all/must focus on best strategic resource use
Effective action – developing skilful and creative actions
Goal-oriented - making sure that all campaigns and actions have a defined end result and are always worked through to conclusion
Well-informed advice and opinions on solutions to the climate and ecological crises

To Persevere
Perseverance: in it for the long haul.
Recognition that winning 'hearts and minds' will not always be easy; there will be battles inside and out but the Dorset CAN cause is needed, is vital and will be worth the effort we will all have to make. Mutual understanding and support will be essential!
Perseverance: we recognise that winning 'hearts and minds' will not always be easy; there will be battles inside and out to produce the strategies needed. We must be resolute in supporting each other to achieve the necessary consensus that will direct our efforts.
Commitment to persevere: collectively we will have to support each other in keeping going even when feeling frustrated by setbacks and lack of progress.
Work tirelessly and urgently

To be Self-responsible/lead by example

To achieve all of the above we need this to be credible and inspire a mass movement.
It's our responsibility to take action and not palm it off on others)
Positive Leadership
Modelling open, democratic, non-violent, respectful engagement and communication
